I saw for the first time in collab class in 2008 a machinima movie, Silver Bells and Golden Spurs, made by using online game Second Life. I was impressed with machinima using online game. However, I also found some problems with it. It was difficult to shoot a film due to latency in certain areas where many users were connected and there were some limitations for making props and building environment to users who did not own land in Second Life.
Therefore I looked for other game for making a machinima film. And I found realXtend which is a free open source virtual world platform. By using this I made my first machinima film dealing with an online-game addiction as the mini-thesis's project in 2009 spring semester.
During a summer I fixed the technical problems for making a machinima using realXtend. After solving the problems, I began to think about a story of machinima. I thought of a detective story at first. I also thought of a man who tries to escape from a digital age, which is a story about a man who does not want to use all kind of digital gadgets in a digital age.
However, I decided to make a machinima about people who want to escape from North Korea after reading the article about North Korean defections.
“About 70 North Koreans were executed by the communist regime after being repatriated by the Chinese government and eight or nine people among them were killed in a public execution to scare the public from any attempt to defect from the country, a South Korean civic group claimed yesterday.” Korea Herald
But I took questions about the differences between a machinima and documentary film for carrying story about North Korean defections to audience during making the presentation last week.
So I changed the plan from making a machinima to creating an online virtual world which contains the 3d animation about North Korea defections. To make the story of 3d animation, I will use fable technique to make it different with a documentary film. In my online virtual world users not only have a chat with other users about North Korean defections but also watch the 3d animation.
I also felt the need for target audience because personal tastes are vary according to the genre of media even though story is same: some people may like watching a movie; others prefer reading a book; some others are fond of watching an animation. My main target audiences are people who like watching a 3d animation and chatting with people in online virtual world.
